Product Description

Banded Gobies are a group of small, colorful reef fish known for their distinct vertical stripes, peaceful nature, and useful sand-sifting behavior in aquariums, with popular types including the Sleeper Banded Goby (sifts sand for food) and the Blue-banded Goby (forms symbiotic pairs with pistol shrimp). They are hardy, reef-safe, and great for community tanks, but need tight lids as strong jumpers, and specific care like deep sandbeds for sifting species.

Key Types & Characteristics:

Sleeper Banded Goby (Amblygobius phalaena): Brown bands on a yellowish body, sifts sand for food, needs deep sand; good for larger tanks (30+ gallons).

Blue-banded Goby (Lythrypnus dalli): Bright red with blue bands, uses pelvic fins as suction cups, forms symbiotic pairs with pistol shrimp, can change sex.

Green Banded Goby (Tigrigobius multifasciatus): Dark green with pale green bars, active, great for smaller tanks, enjoys rockwork.

Hi-Fin Banded Goby: Alternating white/dark bands with yellow fins, forms symbiotic pairs with pistol shrimp, peaceful.

Aquarium Care:

Tank Size: Varies; 20+ gallons for smaller types like Blue-banded, 30+ gallons for sand-sifters.

Substrate: Deep sandbed (coral rubble/sand) for sifting species.

Decor: Plenty of live rock, caves, and crevices for shelter.

Lid: Essential; they are notorious jumpers.

Water: Standard marine parameters (temp 72-78°F, pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025).

Diet: Varied, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, algae (nori).

Temperament: Generally peaceful, reef-safe, but can be territorial with their own kind.
