Product Description

Blue Damselfish (Chrysiptera cyanea) are vibrant, hardy saltwater fish popular in aquariums for their electric blue color, though they can become territorial and aggressive, especially as they mature, requiring a tank with plenty of live rock for hiding and territory definition. Males often develop an orange tail and snout, while females remain mostly blue, and they can darken to nearly black when stressed. They're great for beginners due to their hardiness but need careful tank mate selection and proper water parameters (72-80°F, pH 8.1-8.4).

Key Characteristics

Appearance: Intense blue; males often have yellow/orange tails and snouts; can darken when threatened.

Size: Up to 2.5 inches (6 cm).

Temperament: Hardy but can be aggressive and territorial; may nip at corals.

Reef Safe: Generally considered reef safe, but may bother small-polyped stony corals.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons.

Water Temp: 72-80°F (22-27°C).

pH: 8.1-8.4.

Salinity: 1.020-1.025 specific gravity.

Environment: Needs plenty of live rock for hiding and territory.

Diet & Feeding

Diet: Omnivorous; accept quality flakes, frozen (brine, mysis shrimp), and occasional seaweed.

Tank Mates

Introduce carefully; can harass larger fish or smaller, slower tank mates.

Keeping them with other damselfish requires many hiding spots to reduce aggression.
