Product Description
Paracanthurus hepatus, known as the Palette Surgeonfish or Blue Tang (Dory from Finding Nemo), is a vibrant Indo-Pacific reef fish recognized by its deep blue body, black 'palette' marking, and yellow tail (juveniles are yellow). These active, herbivorous omnivores graze algae and plankton, possess a venomous spine for defense, live in loose groups in clear reefs, and can live over 30 years in the wild, though they are popular but sensitive aquarium fish requiring large tanks and specific algae-based diets.
Identification & Characteristics
Appearance: Bright blue body with a black, curving band from the eye; yellow tail; small scales; distinctive, sharp, retractable spine at the base of the tail.
Size: Grows up to 30-31 cm (12 inches).
Behavior: Active grazers, often in groups, hiding in coral when threatened; color darkens or lightens with stress.
Habitat & Diet
Native Range: Indo-Pacific reefs, from East Africa to Micronesia, Japan, and Australia.
Habitat: Clear, current-swept outer reef slopes, 2-40m deep.
Diet: Primarily algae and zooplankton; needs ample grazing space in aquariums.
Defense & Health
Venom: The spine at the tail base delivers a painful toxin, and the flesh can cause ciguatera poisoning in humans, making them inedible.
Aquarium Care: Sensitive to stress, poor water, and other fish; prone to Marine Ich; requires large tanks with live rock and constant algae.
Reproduction
Spawning: Pelagic spawners (release eggs in open water); eggs drift as larvae before settling as juveniles.
