Product Description

The Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma veliferum) is a striking, herbivorous surgeonfish from the Indo-Pacific, known for its large, "sail-like" dorsal/anal fins that flare for defense and display, featuring brown/gray bodies with bold yellow/white stripes, yellow-spotted heads, and a blue spot near the tail's sharp spine, growing up to 16 inches and requiring large reef tanks with abundant algae to thrive, controlling it as they graze.

Key Characteristics & Care:

Appearance: Dark body with bold yellow/white vertical stripes, yellow dots on a light head, and a bright tail with blue highlights; juveniles are mostly bright yellow with dark bands.

Habitat: Native to coral reefs, lagoons, and seagrass beds in the Indian & Pacific Oceans, needing strong currents and ample space.

Diet: Primarily herbivorous (algae eaters); needs lots of marine algae/seaweed in captivity (flakes, pellets, fresh greens okay), plus supplemental seaweed on a clip.

Temperament: Generally peaceful towards other species but can be territorial (especially with other tangs); introduce them together or last in a community.

Aquarium Needs: Minimum 125-180+ gallons, well-aquascaped with hiding spots, plenty of swimming room, excellent water quality (temp 72-78°F, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025).

Size: Can reach up to 16 inches (40 cm) in length.

Lifespan: Can live over 10 years with optimal care.

Fun Facts:

"Sail" Fins: Their signature tall fins make them appear much larger when threatened, helping deter predators.

Reef Cleaners: Their grazing habits help control algae on coral reefs.

Territorial Defense: Can darken their body to blend in or flash their prominent face dots to warn intruders.
