Product Description

The Scopas Tang (Zebrasoma scopas), also called the Brown or Two-Tone Tang, is a hardy, herbivorous marine fish known for its variable colors (yellow to dark brown/black) and blue dots, popular in aquariums for algae control and reef-safe grazing, needing large tanks (120+ gallons), lots of rock for grazing, and a diet rich in marine algae, best kept with minimal other tangs due to potential aggression.

Appearance & Identification

Color: Varies widely from solid yellow to dark brown or black, often with pale blue dots or stripes, and juveniles have distinct yellow bars.

Size: Grows to about 6-8 inches (15-20 cm).

Distinguishing Feature: Males have a prominent patch of bristles (setae) near their tail spine.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size: Minimum 120-125 gallons with a 4-foot length for swimming room.

Environment: Requires plenty of live rock for grazing, strong water flow, and a tight-fitting lid to prevent jumping.

Water Quality: Needs stable parameters (temp 72-78°F, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.02-1.025) and good filtration.

Temperament: Generally peaceful but territorial with other tangs; best kept singly or with careful introduction in a species-appropriate tank.

Diet

Primary Food: Herbivore; needs a diet of marine algae, supplemented with nori, spirulina, or veggie clips.

Supplements: Will accept flake foods and occasional meaty items like mysis shrimp, but algae is crucial.
