Product Description

The Striped Blenny (Meiacanthus grammistes) is a popular, peaceful, reef-safe saltwater fish known for its bright yellow head, black and white stripes, and venomous fangs (harmless to humans but deter predators). These active, personality-filled fish thrive in established tanks (30+ gallons) with live rock for grazing on microfauna, require frequent small meals (omnivores), and benefit from tank mates of different shapes/sizes to avoid territorial disputes.

Key Characteristics & Care:

Scientific Name: Meiacanthus grammistes.

Appearance: Yellow head fading into black and white stripes along a slender body, often ending in dots.

Size: Grows to about 4-5 inches.

Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be semi-aggressive/territorial with similar-looking fish; uses venomous fangs defensively.

Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons.

Habitat: Needs ample live rock for hiding, grazing, and perching, as they are active open-water swimmers.

Diet: Omnivore; enjoys algae, seaweed, flakes, pellets, and meaty foods like brine/mysis shrimp (feed 2-3 times daily).

Reef Safe: Yes, doesn't bother corals.

Water Parameters: Standard marine parameters (Temp: 72-78°F, pH: 8.1-8.4, Salinity: 1.02-1.025).

Captive Breeding: Widely available as captive-bred.

Important Considerations:

Venom: They possess fangs with venom used for defense, but it's not dangerous to humans unless handled without caution.

Tank Mates: Introduce at the same time as a pair or keep solitary; avoid other blennies or similarly shaped fish.

Jumping: Use a secure lid as they are known to jump.
